"what about that name? flareman jr? really?"

WINWINWINWINWINWINWIN

Back in the day in Descent II you could fire a thing out of your ship called a flare.

Important: A flare was a little yellow triangle that did nothing.

(that is a lie. they lit up rooms and delivered a whopping 1 damage to your opponent.)

Anyway, there was a guy online ("flareman") who would taunt people by shooting flares over the wreckage of their ship after he destroyed them.
This seemed like a rather appealing trademark to the elementary school aged space pilot (myself), who adopted it as his name, simply adding a Jr. to the end of this poor fellow's name.
Whether he even knew some kid ripped off his name remains a mystery.
Whatever the case, it was quickly adopted as my moniker of choice in all video games. The dawn of the console-based gaming age brought Halo to my attention. I quickly and cleverly realized that the infamous plasma grenade could be used as my "flare" trademark in Halo multiplayer. This idea was reinforced by the discovery that the enemies yell "FLARE!" before heaving a sparkly mess of superheated gases in your direction.
In dedication to the name, I gloat over an exeptional kill by chucking one of these "flare" plasma grenades at my deceased opponent.

flare plasma.
